Graeme Hill is best known as the radio host of The Weekend Variety Wireless on Radio Live which is broadcast nationally in New Zealand, and of course on the world wide web. The show has a strong science slant with regular segments and field stories devoted to scientific endeavours including Astronomy, conservation, biology and geology.
This mix is unique in New Zealand broadcasting let alone in the world of ‘commercial radio’.
It’s a testament to Hill’s ability to make the arcane not only understandable but also highly entertaining.
Graeme has a long standing obsession with ‘finding stuff out’, he studied Zoology at Auckland university before becoming the breakfast host on radio BFM where he introduced the segment ‘Science is Ok’ with Viki Hyde (now into it’s 20th year on air).
Graeme belongs to a long list of organizations such as Forest and Bird, the Herpetological Society (lizard fanciers) the Auckland Astronomical society, The NZ Plant Conservation Network and the Skeptics Society.
He’s also a backyard boffin, with a staggering collection of native flora and breeding-programmes for native butterflies. He is widely read with an equal passion for history and culture.
During weekends and holidays this boxing aficionado will often be found rambling through New Zealand’s extensive bush or showing friends and family the rings of Saturn and the moons of Jupiter.
He is the 2010 recipient of the Rationalist Society’s Charles Southwell award for Science and Reason.
In short he is ‘science mad’ and a ‘nature nutter’. He even recorded a song about the Hubblescope for his band the Able Tasmans. His TV experience includes a stint on Music TV show Ground Zero and as a regular on Sports Café. Graeme has also written extensively for New Zealand television hits Eating Media Lunch, The Unauthorised History of New Zealand and Birdland.
